Electrical safety testing checklist for UK businesses

Pretty much every business relies on a reliable, and safe, supply of electricity. Ensuring your electrical equipment works and is fit for use when you need it can only be achieved through regular checks, servicing, and proper management.

Without taking these steps, you not only jeopardise your business’ operations, but you also put your employees at risk if they’re using unsafe equipment.

To ensure you’re complying with your responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), and other legislation to protect your business and employees, our experts have put together this hand Electrical Safety Testing Checklist.

 

PAT testing

• Is your electrical equipment up to date with its PAT testing?
• If your business uses electrical equipment outdoors, is it Residual Current Devices (RCD) protected in case of harsh weather?
• How often do you carry out visual inspections on your electrical equipment to check for wear and tear, tripping hazards from cables or overloaded extension leads?
• Do you know what ‘classes’ your electrical equipment falls under?
• Have you PAT tested your employees’ equipment? Laptop, work mobile phone, desk lighting for example.
• Have you ensured all labelling is correct and up to date?

 

Fixed wire testing

• Is your Electrical Inspection Condition Report(EICR) still in date?
• How often do you need an EICR?
• If your EICR has expired, have you checked your insurance is still valid?
• Do you have an appointed employee who switches off all non-essential items, plugs, extension leads and sockets at the end of the working day?
• Do you have a record of your fixed wire testing compliance to prove to inspectors, insurers, or anyone who might request to see it?

 

Electrical Vehicle Charging Points

• Did your charge point supplier discuss with you how long it will take to fix outages?
• Do you ensure your charging connectors remain dry during harsh weather?
• When is your annual safety testing and maintenance due?
• Have you properly documented all your maintenance certificates?
• How often do you or your appointed person visually inspect the charging points for damage or faults?

 

Training

• Are all your employees up to speed with their electrical safety training?
• Are all your electrical safety training records up to date?
